Five Steps to Beating Your Depression!

Studies have shown that depression affects up to 1 in 4 people at some time in their lives. This staggering statistic means that it's worth reading on and finding out what depression is, and how you can seek to fix this part of your life!

Depression is probably the most widespread psychological condition around today and perhaps the most damaging. Depression can range in intensity from mild depression which has depressive thinking styles that can sometimes get out of control, and can be episodic - meaning sometimes you're feeling OK, and sometimes you get out of control.

There are a lot of technical things that can be said about depression, but for now, lets just say that the worst part of depression is that you feel like you are out of control.  You feel like the steering wheel of your life has been handed over to someone other than yourself, and you feel like there is nothing you can do to make your life better.

Whenever these "depressive thinking styles" get out of control, the depression can worsen to become a severe depression, sometimes leading people to commit suicide out of a feeling of utter hopelessness, but just as often leading the person to self harm.

Depression is very serious and sometimes a person with depression will not feel like they are being taken seriously, and this will actually worsen the depression and its impact on the person's self image and feelings.

There are numerous inventories and measures of how intense a person's depression is, but the only true reflection of the seriousness of a person's depression is inside the affected person.  It is only with a person centered, caring approach that the depressed person can achieve breakthroughs.

There are a huge number of antidepressants being prescribed every day, and sometimes these work well, but it is agreed that the very best way to treat depression is through therapy and counseling.

A person who needs to receive counseling for depression needs to have a counselor who is an expert in depression and working with depressives.  Some generalist counselors will not have the expertise and abilities to really engage with a depression sufferer.  It is preferred that the counselor has dealt with depressive clients before.  It is also important that the counselor has some faith in the client!

It is essential that the depressed person has someone who can cheerlead them when they don't have a lot of morale on their own.  It is essential that they have someone who will help them to get up again when they fall down emotionally. It is essential that they have someone who can truly help them when they feel like failures and not just say "how do you feel now?"!  If you are a depression sufferer reading this now, you probably know exactly what I mean.

I propose that a counselor should be like training wheels on a bicycle.  Necessary for a short while, but just a means to an end.  I think that also the missing ingredient is that your therapist should also be someone who is like the parent who holds you when you are learning to ride the bike in this analogy.  You may fall, but you have someone who is supportive and will help you get up again and give you the confidence to do this.
